SOLARIUM
SOLARIUM is a permanent artwork suspended in the central atrium of Kolding Storcenter. Eighteen large acrylic discs hang overhead, turning slowly in the natural airflow of the space. The work draws attention upwards and gives the busy environment a slower rhythm.
During the day, the discs catch daylight and the occasional ray of direct sun, casting shifting reflections and coloured patterns across the surrounding walls and floor. At night, spotlights take over, and the mobile turns the atrium into a play of light, colour and movement.
SOLARIUM was commissioned by Copenhagen architectural studio Spacelab as part of their refurbishment of Kolding Storcenter. From the start, the project was planned with care for construction, maintenance, and the centre's changing use of the space. The work was built to be fully dismantled and recycled when its time was up. After a few years in the atrium, the centre's infrastructure changed, and Solarium was taken down as planned, leaving no trace on the building.
